Getting Started with TrayGen

Follow this 4-step workflow to plan and generate Gridfinity-compatible drawer bases and bins.

Step 1 — Drawer Setup

Start at the Drawer Setup page.

  • Measure your drawer's inner width and depth (in mm).
  • If the drawer isn't perfectly square, use the smallest (tightest) measurements.
  • Select your printer preset (or "Custom" and enter your bed size).
  • Configure grid alignment (left/center/right, top/center/bottom).
  • TrayGen automatically computes the Gridfinity footprint and margins.

Step 2 — Fit Test

Go to the Fit Test page.

  • Download and print the fit-test shells first.
  • TrayGen generates a simple "main + remainder" segment plan for each axis so you can measure a single delta edge-to-edge.
  • The ZIP contains two folders: width/ and depth/. Each folder contains:
    • main_…_xN.stl: print N copies at +0
    • remainder_…_minus5_to_plus5.stl: this is the only segment where you try deltas and choose the best fit
  • Each fit-test piece is labeled with a delta like -2, +0, +3.
  • Choose the delta that slides in smoothly without forcing, but also doesn't rattle.
  • Enter your best-fit deltas (width and depth) in the fit test page.

⚠️ Important: The fit test helps ensure your final plates fit perfectly. Don't skip this step!

Step 3 — Planner

Use the Planner to preview and export baseplates.

  • Preview the drawer grid layout and plate tiling.
  • See how many plates you'll need to print.
  • Click Download plate STLs to export.
  • Plates are automatically tiled to fit your printer's bed size.
  • Print one STL per print job.

Step 4 — Bins

Design and export bins at the Bins page.

  • Drag-select on the grid to create bin footprints.
  • Customize heights (Low/Med/Tall/Custom), wall profiles (straight/frontDrop/scoop), and stacking interfaces.
  • Create multiple layers for complex layouts.
  • Export all bins as a single ZIP file.

Troubleshooting

  • Can't access a step? Make sure you've completed the previous steps. The workflow will show a gate message if prerequisites are missing.
  • Planner requires drawer setup: Go to Drawer Setup first and configure your drawer dimensions.
  • Bins requires drawer setup: The bin grid size is derived from your drawer configuration.
  • Want to skip steps? You can click on any step in the stepper to jump ahead, but you'll need to meet the prerequisites first.
  • Lost your progress? Your workflow state is saved in your browser. If you cleared site data or switched devices, start again at Drawer Setup.
